In March, the Laboratory of Media Studies at the University of Warsaw had the pleasure of hosting another group of participants from the Media Knowledge Olympiad. These students, hailing from schools across Poland, were eager to experience firsthand what scientific research looks like in practice.
During their visit, the students were introduced to cutting-edge biometric research methods used in media studies, such as eye tracking, face tracking, and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR). The team at the laboratory explained how these methods play a crucial role in understanding media behavior, emphasizing the importance of research triangulation. It was a unique opportunity for the students to see how modern technologies are applied to analyze audience interactions with media.
The visit also served as an informative session about the work of a media scholar. We discussed how the field blends a passion for technology with social research, and how scholars in media studies contribute to our understanding of how information is consumed and interpreted. This interactive experience allowed the participants to gain insight into the intersection of theory and practice, highlighting how research can shape our perceptions of the media landscape.
The visit was part of a project executed by the Media Studies Research Laboratory under the “Creation of promotional materials and preparation of a blog dedicated to presenting and promoting selected scientific projects conducted by the LBM UW” project, which is part of the “Initiative of Excellence – Research University” program (Action III.3.2 “Promotion of Scientific Research”). We are grateful for the enthusiasm, insightful questions, and positive energy brought by the students, making the experience both stimulating and inspiring. We look forward to seeing these bright young minds continue to explore the exciting world of media and research!
