In the past few weeks, the Laboratory of Media Studies at the University of Warsaw had the pleasure of hosting a special group of students – participants of the Media Knowledge Olympiad.
These were students from high schools across Poland who demonstrated a great interest in the subjects of media, communication, and scientific research. This visit provided an excellent opportunity for the youth to see how scientific work is done “behind the scenes” and how research projects are carried out in our laboratory.
During the visit, our guests had the chance to explore our research space, familiarize themselves with the equipment used in the lab, and delve into the intricacies of the media studies profession. Participants were able not only to see equipment used for eye tracking, face tracking, and GSR but also to learn how these cutting-edge technologies are used to analyze media audience behavior. These were valuable conversations that helped young people better understand how complex and, at the same time, fascinating media research can be.
We shared our research projects with the participants and also talked about our future plans. Such meetings provide the youth with an opportunity to see how theory intersects with practice, and how science becomes not just an interesting, but also an inspiring field. It was also an excellent opportunity for discussions on how scientific research can change our perception of the world of information and how media studies as a field of research can influence our understanding of media.
All activities were carried out as part of the project “Creation of promotional materials and preparation of a blog dedicated to the presentation and promotion of selected scientific projects conducted by the LBM UW team,” implemented under the “Initiative of Excellence – Research University” Program (Action III.3.2 “Promotion of scientific research”). This project aims to promote contemporary research in the field of media studies and present its results to a broad audience.
We sincerely thank all participants for their enthusiasm, excellent questions, and the energy they brought to our laboratory. We are glad that we could share our passion for science and media with them, and also inspire the younger generation to continue exploring this fascinating field.
We wish you success on your educational journey and hope to meet again – maybe already at our Faculty!
